Sitting at a waterhole at Etosha in Namibia, it’s interesting to watch the giraffes. The conditions are harsh and dry, and they all need water. Yet some stay far away, not daring to come near, while some confidently walk to the water and drink, while others walk right to the edge and then, after a long wait, turn away and walk back into the dry savanna. However, choosing not to drink because of the perceived risk ultimately means certain death. This behaviour is much the same as human behaviour. Jesus is the water of life (John 4:14). He is the only source of eternal life. Yet when people hear the message of Jesus and his resurrection, we, like the giraffes, have one of three responses – turn away, delay, or drink. “When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, ‘We want to hear more about this later.’…but some joined him and became believers” (Acts 17:32-34). And so, as you stand at the edge of the water of life, deciding what to do, Jesus asks, “Are you also going to leave?” May your answer be like Peter, who replied, “Lord, to whom would we go?
