“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”” (John 6:5). It’s a crowd of 5000 people. What would you have answered?“Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”” (John 6:7). This is a crazy question to even ask. Even if there was a nearby shop it would never have enough food, and it would be prohibitively expensive. Crazy question. Yet we read that, “Jesus asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.” (John 6:6). Jesus wasn’t looking for a “where” answer but a “who” answer. He wanted Philip to see that when our “what”, “how”, and “where” answers don’t work, there is a “who” answer that does. Peter senses this and replies, “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” (John 6:9). He gives what he has and hands the problem back to Jesus. And so Jesus takes this meager offering and miraculously multiples it to feed the entire crowd, with leftovers! When you have no answers to life’s problems, place your faith, even if it is little, in the Lord’s hands and let him be your answer. He already knows what he is going to do.
