We were driving through the countryside. It was summer, the dry season. The sun was scorching, and the surrounding farmlands were dry and barren. We reached a hiking trail to a waterfall high up in the mountain. After the dry and thirsty landscape, the contrast was remarkable. A cool, lush indigenous forest clustered around a river welcomed us. Birds and butterflies were everywhere. The forest was alive with life. The plants and animals were not impacted by the lack of rain, as they had a river providing for all their needs. It made me think of Jesus’ words to the Samaritan woman. “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14). Without Jesus, we will be impacted by the conditions around us. We will experience the searing heat of things like lust, jealousy, anger, selfishness, division, and envy (Galatians 5:19-21). If your life is dry and lifeless, come to Jesus, the ever-flowing stream of water. And just like a mountain stream constantly provides for the needs of the animals and plants beside it, so too will Jesus be the living water in your life, always providing for your needs, even in the scorching seasons of life.
