It’s God’s fault!

It’s God’s fault!

The Book of Job is one of my favourite books in the Bible. The narrative description of the depth of God’s knowledge, the intricacy of his wisdom, and the vastness of his reign leave me in awe every time I read the final chapters. But what really stood out to me this time was the question God posed to Job at the end of the book. God says, “Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?” (Job 40:8). The question hit home as I reflected on the state of the world today. We find ourselves in a “self-serving” society where self is elevated above all else. How often do we choose to serve ourselves rather than others or God? How often do we ignore God’s truth when it is convenient for us? We have become self-righteous rather than selfless. We choose to question the Creator’s will rather than the created’s desires. Let us think of what we are implying when we begin to discredit God to justify our own beliefs and actions. And most importantly, let us never forget who God is – “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6).
