Three times in the past month, I have been woken at night by God speaking—but not in the way you might expect. I would be asleep when suddenly, in the middle of the night, I would hear a loud voice speaking. The most recent time, in the early hours of the morning, the voice said, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel.” I awoke with a start as the voice continued. Just like before, it was the Bible app on my phone. For some reason, the app randomly starts reading a Bible passage. The third time it happened, I awoke, stopped it, and minimized the app to prevent it from happening again. But in the morning, I reflected on how I compared to Samuel. While sleeping in the tabernacle, he heard a voice and assumed it was Eli, the high priest. After the second time, Eli told him it must be God speaking. So, on the third occasion, Samuel replied, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). And God spoke to him. I wonder how often God tries to speak to us, yet we minimize His voice and move on. “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (Revelation 3:20).
