Blood on the lintel

Blood on the lintel

It was dark, and no doubt they could hear the sounds of wailing as new cries of despair rose from more and more houses. The angel of death was moving through Egypt like a deadly, unstoppable plague, taking the lives of all firstborn, from the lowest servant to the highest ruler. Yet the nation of Israel was safe. They had a special protection in place. They had been told to take the Passover lamb: “And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it” (Exodus 12:7). “The blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you” (Exodus 12:13). Despite the fear and death around them, they were safe and at peace in their homes. We are living in a world where the sound of wailing and despair is worse than ever. We hear cries from all around us, from the lowest servant to the highest ruler. Yet we are offered protection. The lamb that brought peace and protection thousands of years ago brings us eternal protection today. “Since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation” (Romans 5:9). There is only one way to escape despair, and ultimately death, and that is by the blood of Jesus. Let Him be your peace and protection.
