We had the amazing privilege of getting to go on a walking safari in Kruger National Park. The area where we walked was abundant with game – everything from elephant, lion, rhino, giraffe, and much more. While we were commenting on the abundance of wildlife, our guide asked us if we knew why this was the case. “Lots of good vegetation,” we replied. “Yes, but there is something more fundamental. It’s the basalt rock below the surface. This rock is rich in minerals. This results in good tree and vegetation growth. And this in turn brings about abundant insect and animal life. It’s the mother rock that is the cause of all this.” As we looked on in awe at a huge herd of wildebeest and impala I realised how true this was. It is all about the rock. The unseen foundation below everything. Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock” (Matthew 7:24).
