Are you religious? It’s not a question that’s well received today. The word “religion” often brings to mind self-righteous people, money-driven mega-churches, or ornate cathedrals. As a result, many disassociate themselves from religion, preferring phrases like “I’m spiritual” or vague terms like “the universe” to explain their beliefs or experiences. Yet the Bible calls us to true religion—not how the world defines it, but as God intends. “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” (James 1:27). True religion is humble and outwardly focused, caring for the marginalized as a reflection of an inward love for God. It embodies the greatest commandment: love God and love your neighbour (Matthew 22:37-40). This is the heart of God’s entire message in the Bible. It’s what true religion is all about.
