Are you image conscious? Does what you wear or the car you drive define you? Do outward symbols project how you want to be perceived? For many of us the answer is “yes”. Jehoiakim was king of Judah. Wanting to project the “right” image, he decorated his palace with splendor. However, God gave him this message—“A beautiful cedar palace does not make a great king! Your father, Josiah, also had plenty to eat and drink. But he was just and right in all his dealings. That is why God blessed him” (Jeremiah 22:15). It might be natural for us to want to project an image, to be noticed by what we have. But God warns us that great possessions don’t make great people. Our image should not be defined by the good things we have but by the good things we do. Our image should not be defined by trying to reflect others but by trying to reflect God. Because God created us “in his own image” (Genesis 1:27) to reflect his goodness. Seek to be just and right in all your dealings and show God’s image to the world. What image will you show?
