The cure for offence

The cure for offence

Why do people get offended? Most often, the root is pride—our pride gets hurt. So, how do we overcome pride? By embracing humility. But what does it mean to embrace humility? It means to serve. Service is the essence of humility. How do we learn to serve? We must return to the beginning, when God made us, and recognise that every person, no matter who they are or how they behave, is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). When we serve others, we are ultimately serving God. “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people” (Colossians 3:23). When we see God’s image in everyone, our service becomes worship. As we serve God through others—regardless of how they treat us—we cultivate true humility. And when God becomes our identity and our pride, there is no room left for offence. Jesus embodied this truth through the ultimate act of service—dying for us despite our sin: “Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:7-8). How will you serve God today?
