Recently, we hiked up a mountain. At first, there was some cloud cover, but soon it vanished, and the harsh summer sun beat down on us. Foolishly, we hadn’t brought enough water, so we began rationing single sips as we continued upward. At the summit, after enjoying the views, we faced the daunting prospect of a long, hot, and thirsty descent. But then, unexpectedly, a mist rushed up the mountain from below, engulfing us in cool air and shielding us from the harsh sun. It made an incredible difference as we made our way back. Thanking God for His cool shade, I was reminded of His care for Israel in the desert: “He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night” (Psalm 105:39). When the trials of life burn down on us and the journey seems endless, have faith. God is gracious. Though the challenges may remain, He will always provide His sheltering comfort.
