God’s Finger Painting

What's the difference between "I made this with my hands" and "I made this with my fingers"? "Made with my hands" implies something large; "made with my fingers" suggests something smaller – think a table versus a miniature sculpture. Now consider what God calls His finger work: "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place" (Psalms 8:3-4). The entire star-filled universe is God's small work. When we stand under the night sky we already feel insignificant – and then we realize it's just finger painting for God. That's exactly why David marvels, "what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?" (Psalms 8:4). We are not the main character in this story. Yet despite God's staggering vastness and our smallness, we are loved beyond words. "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 1:4-5). The God who painted galaxies with His fingers chose you – before time began – to be part of His family.
