What Does Knowing God Look Like?

In every generation people long for leaders they can trust – marked by honesty, justice, and integrity rather than greed and self-interest. Yet the qualities God values in a leader often differ sharply from those we see in the world today. Jeremiah 22 contrasts two kings, Jehoiakim and his father Josiah, revealing the heart of true leadership. Jehoiakim pursued luxury and wealth, building his palace through exploited workers and dishonest gain; his greatness was measured by what he accumulated. King Josiah lived differently. He enjoyed God's blessings, yet he ruled with righteousness and justice, his concern not for expanding his palace but for defending those with no voice. God commends him with these remarkable words: "He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" (Jeremiah 22:16). This verse reveals something profound about God's heart and the kind of leaders He seeks. To know God is to reflect His character – showing compassion, pursuing justice, caring for the vulnerable. Our relationship with Him is seen in how we treat people, especially those who cannot repay us. Whether we lead a nation, a business, a family, or simply influence those around us, God measures greatness by humble service.
