Posture of faith

What does it take to see the risen Jesus? To truly believe in his power to transform our lives? Reading God’s Word, prayer, and good deeds all help, yet something deeper is needed first. Many do these things and still miss the miracle of Jesus. The clue lies in one small word from the first encounters with the risen Lord. “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and…” (Luke 24:12). “Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she…” (John 20:11). What comes next? We may think it is, “and looking in”. However, before looking, there is stooping. “And stooping down, Peter looking in, saw the linen clothes lying” (John 20:4-5). “But Mary…stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre” (John 20:11). To see the risen Lord, they had to stoop – an act of humility. Seeing Jesus requires bowing our hearts, surrendering pride and human wisdom. Only in humility can we truly witness the transforming presence of Christ. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10).
