What is your favourite smell? The smell of baked bread? The aroma of food cooking on a barbecue? The smell of a wood fire burning on a cold winter’s night? The scent of a sea breeze? There is nothing more powerful and stirring than a beautiful smell. However, the more important question is not “What is your favourite smell?” but “What type of smell are you to others?” Paul tells us that “we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ to them being saved and those who are perishing.” (2 Corinthians 2:15). How do we ensure we are this sweet smell to those we meet? The wise writer of Proverbs gives us the answer. “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24). The words you speak Your facial expressions. Your actions. These are the things that are your aroma to others. When people see you, does your presence stir in them beautiful and powerful feelings? Our aroma is sometimes good and sometimes bad, but God says we can be “the sweet aroma of Christ”. If you took every smell you loved and combined them into the perfect, most powerful, most stirring emotion possible, you would have Jesus. Let Jesus be your aroma today, and then his smile, kindness, and love will radiate from you to everyone you meet.
