One thing I seldom do is sleep during the day. But recently while on holiday in a hot part of the world, I gave in. Lying on the beach inside a cool cave with waves rolling onto the sand, I drifted off. Yet sleeping in public feels strange—when you’re asleep, you’re completely unaware of your surroundings. You can’t see or react. You’re vulnerable. It’s only when you truly feel safe that you can fall asleep. With family around, I took a short 30-minute nap. It reminded me how fragile we are when our guard is down. The Psalmist felt this. Surrounded by enemies and danger, sleep could have meant death. But he wrote, “I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me” (Psalm 3:5). His safety wasn’t his surroundings—it was God. When we are weak, anxious, or unsure, we can turn to the same assurance. “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe” (Psalm 4:8). When you can’t be in control, trust the One who never sleeps and never stops watching over you. Open Bible – bit.ky/psa3v5-6, bit.ly/psa4v8 (Craig B)
