Some of Jesus’ commands are uncomfortable. It’s easy to read them and move on to something else. But when Jesus dedicates nearly an entire chapter to one of these commands, it becomes harder to ignore—though I’ve found I’m still capable of doing so. In Luke 14, Jesus is invited to a banquet at the home of an important person. He notices how people seek the best seats and instructs us to be humble. That’s challenging but manageable…maybe. Then comes the part we’d rather skip: “Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back, and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous’” (Luke 14:12-14). In case we’re tempted to overlook this, Jesus follows it with a parable about inviting the poor, crippled, blind, and lame to a great banquet (v21). Will you obey this uncomfortable command?
