Below dust stirs and the grassy plains roll like waves as the wind blows across the earth. Above, power, energy, and unimaginable knowing pulses in the heavens. The dust coalesces. A body forms. Heaven’s power reaches down to earth’s potential. Earth-made lungs fill with heaven’s air. A miracle. Human life. Adam and Eve born of earth and heaven are given everything they need in a garden planted by God in Eden. Everything is theirs for the taking except one thing, the fruit from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But a serpent suggests something “better” they could have. “God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5). They can “be like God”. It’s a desire too great and they eat, disobeying God’s single law, and sin enters the world, and its consequence, death and separation from God. Heaven and earth are divided. But in the midst of this dark moment, God makes a promise when he says to the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15). A descendant will be born, who though sin will temporarily wound him, will triumph over it, crushing its head, removing its consequence forever. He will unite heaven and earth.
