Des was carrying a cup of coffee to his desk when Anne rushed past and bumped him, causing coffee to spill on Joan, who was seated nearby. “Why did you spill coffee on me?” Joan asked. “It’s because Anne bumped me,” Des replied. “No, it’s not,” Joan said, causing Des to become defensive immediately. But before he could answer, Joan continued. “It’s because you had coffee in your cup.” And that’s so true. If Des had an empty cup or a cup filled with water, it wouldn’t have been coffee he spilt, regardless of who bumped him. This is an important lesson. What we spill is not because of what happens to us but because of what is in us. Jesus put it like this – “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart” (Luke 6:45). How we react when life bumps, us is an indication of what is in our heart. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).
