Fraud Triangle

Fraud Triangle

In business school, we were taught the key elements associated with acts of fraud. We learnt about a concept called the “fraud triangle”, which states that in most cases of fraud, three elements are present – Incentive, Opportunity, and Rationalization. These three elements are ever present, not only in the business world with financial fraud but in our daily lives, fighting against sin and earthly desires. Like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we too are provided with an incentive to indulge in the wisdom of the world, to elevate ourselves and try and be like God. The opportunities are abundant, and the same serpent mind which rationalised the act to Eve is ever present, saying, “You will not certainly die”. When you find yourself making decisions in your life, do not listen to the voice of the serpent; instead, be led by the spirit. “But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.” (Romans 8:10). Choose to live a life governed by the Spirit and not by the flesh, a life led by light and not by darkness, and then you surely will not die.
