Resisting temptation

Resisting temptation

Jesus is our ultimate example of how to resist temptation. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that Jesus fully understands our struggle: “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Jesus experienced temptation in every way we do, yet He remained faithful to God. Because of this, we can find comfort knowing that He understands what we face. When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He emphasised our need for God’s help in resisting temptation: “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). This prayer reveals an important truth – we cannot overcome temptation on our own. We must rely daily on God’s strength, protection, and deliverance. Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness provides another powerful lesson. Each time He was tempted, Jesus responded with God’s Word: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4). Victory over temptation comes from a heart grounded in Scripture. When God’s Word fills our minds, it strengthens us to choose His way over the world’s desires.
