Hearing God

Hearing God

How do we get closer to God? How do we talk to God? How do we hear God? These are questions we’ve all had at some time. Non-believers sometimes ask, “If God spoke to people so often in the Bible, why has he stopped doing so today?” Most Christians would answer that God still speaks to us, but not necessarily in spoken words. It may be hard to grasp this in the hustle and bustle of our world. It’s difficult to hear God in the noise of our lives, careers and societal pursuits. One solution is to immerse yourself in His creation because “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). As I write this, I find myself in the remote plains of Africa, far from man-made noise. I can hear God’s word in the gentle breeze, the flowing stream, and the burning red sunset. But it’s not only here – seated in a park, standing by a lake, walking along a driveway, we can hear Him. Step away from human creations for a moment and let God speak to you in his creation without words and in ways so powerful you will know for certain that He still speaks. Maybe we can’t hear God speak because our lives are too noisy. As the Psalmist said, “Be still and know I am God” (Psalm 46:10). This special blessing he leaves to us, his followers. Listen.
