Look above the mountains

Look above the mountains

Awe-inspiring. We are staying at a rustic cabin nestled at the base of majestic mountains rising like giant sentinels toward the azure blue sky. The recent rains have caused multiple silky waterfalls to plummet down the steep cliffs, creating an otherworldly scene. I can see why people look at mountains and feel close to God. Israel of old would often create “high places” on mountains where they would worship the gods – gods of their making. As majestic as mountains are, and regardless of anthropomorphic names we use like “Mother Earth”, – they are non-sentient, uncaring edifices of stone. We should be in awe of how great they are and the beauty of nature. We should care for and protect our precious planet. But these mountains won’t save us from dying. Mother Earth will not remove our curse of sin. But, if we lift our eyes higher, above the mountains, beyond the stars to the mountain maker, the star breather (Psalm 33v6), there we will find strength, hope, and life. “I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from GOD, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.” (Psalms 121:1-2). Look in awe at the mountains but bow in awe to their maker.
