Sometimes Jesus says things just seem too crazy. On one occasion, talking about rich people, he says, “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24). That means if you are rich – which most of us are compared to the billions who live below the poverty line – then we have no hope. There’s just no way a huge camel is squashing through the eye of a needle. However, this story is in the context of a discussion with a young man who claimed to be Godly, but when challenged to give up his money to better serve God, he couldn’t. It wasn’t so much about the money, as many rich people like Abraham, David, Lydia, and others were Godly. It was about priorities – perspective. Is our money and pursuit of wealth first or God? Is our money our focus or God? When the camel, a symbol of wealth, is moved far away, it becomes small, and suddenly, the camel does fit through the eye of the needle. Jesus tells us, “But seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). Put God first. Bring him close.
