Bent trees

Bent trees

Along the Seapoint promenade in Cape Town are a set of trees that, over the years of exposure to the regular Cape southeaster wind, are growing bent 90 degrees over. Amazingly, these trees are standing. However, should a vicious storm suddenly arise, it’s these trees that will survive, not the ones that the wind hasn’t bent. The reason these trees won’t fall is because they have had to send their roots deep down to keep them upright. In life, God’s Spirit will blow on us, and if we let it, he will slowly bend us to his will. While our shape may seem strange and weak to others, he does this so our unseen roots, where real strength lies, grow deeper and stronger—roots grounded ever more firmly in God, the rock of our salvation. And so when the great storms arise that lash all around us, those who have been shaped and strengthened by God will never fall. This is my prayer for you – “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” (Ephesians 3:16-17).
