Dry and shriveled

Dry and shriveled

When we arrived back at our cottage in Franschhoek after a few weeks away, I noticed the impact of the hot, dry summer—our grass had turned brown, and the plants looked shriveled. It was a sad sight, a stark picture of what our spiritual lives become without God’s living water. The heat of the world and its trials can leave us dry, weather-beaten, and dying inside. But Jesus tells us, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). We’ve all seen those gardens that remain lush and green, often sustained by borehole water—a constant, never-ending supply. The same is true for our spiritual lives. “Blessed is the man whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:2-3). This is the life God offers when we make Him our daily source of living water—a life that flourishes, bearing fruit, and never running dry.
