Have you heard the high-pitched sound of a cicada buzzing in the summer air? The cicada is a fascinating little creature. It spends six or seven years underground before climbing up a tree, shedding its skin, and living above ground for only about six weeks. Its discarded skin clings to the tree as a reminder of its short time in the light. This peculiar life cycle brings to mind the words of Psalm 139, which speak of God’s ever-present nature. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:7-8). No matter where we are—whether deep underground, in the heights of heaven, or the depths of the ocean—we are never alone. God’s Spirit is always with us, guiding us, and taking us by the hand. Just as the cicada emerges into the light after years in darkness, so we can trust that God’s presence will find us, sustain us, and lead us through every stage of our journey.
