In the first hour after birth, if a baby is placed on their mother’s chest, they instinctively begin what’s called the “breast crawl.” Without instruction or assistance, they inch their way upward in search of nourishment. It’s wired into them—a natural, urgent, consuming need to feed. That same craving is meant to exist in us spiritually. Peter writes, “Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness” (1 Peter 2:2–3). Once we’ve tasted God’s grace, our hearts should long for more—reaching, crawling, crying out. This hunger is evidence of new life, a soul awakening to its need for daily spiritual sustenance. Just as no substitute can satisfy a newborn like a mother’s milk, nothing else can fill our spiritual hunger like the presence of God. He designed the desire—and He alone satisfies it.
