Writing down life

Writing down life

I have kept a somewhat irregular diary of life for about 35 years. I would write about life’s happenings as a way of talking to myself about what was going on. This meant I would only write either in times of difficulty or joy. However, about ten years ago, I started keeping a daily diary. And this habit has been amazing. Reflecting on life is extremely valuable whether the days are difficult, joyous, or simply mundane. Recording our thoughts and activities helps us see the miracle of God in the details over time—something we can easily miss. In addition, writing helps us remember. It reinforces and reframes. God said that a king was to “write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law” (Deuteronomy 17:18). While not a diary, it was nonetheless a way to get the king to reflect on the stories and laws of God. Similarly, we need to remember what God does daily in our lives. “Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live.” (Deuteronomy 4:9). Life happens. But in it, God works. Look, see, and remember. God is always there. Open Bible – http://bit.ly/Deu4v9, http://bit.ly/Deu17v18
