It’s one of the shortest Bible verses and commands: “Rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). But how can we possibly rejoice always? We can rejoice in good times, but in all circumstances? It seems impossible. The key to this instruction is found in Philippians 4:4: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” The key is rejoicing in the Lord. The command isn’t “Be happy always”; it’s “rejoice always.” Happiness is temporary and dependent on external factors, but joy, when powered by the Lord, is permanent and rooted in the Spirit. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), a divine gift enabling us to experience God’s joy no matter our circumstances. The first mention of joy in the New Testament is in Matthew 2:10: “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” This joy came from the birth of Jesus, who brings ultimate joy to all people. Today, let that divine joy fill you. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
