True joy is found in taking on responsibility. This may seem counterintuitive, as many believe freedom from obligations—perhaps on a white beach under a palm tree—is the key to happiness. Yet, in Jesus’ parable of the Talents, the “Joy of the Lord” was not found in idleness but in added responsibility. “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’” (Matthew 25:21). When God designed the garments for Aaron and the high priests, they carried the names of Israel’s tribes on their shoulders and over their hearts, symbolizing their responsibility for the people. “In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chest piece over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place. This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the LORD” (Exodus 28:29). True joy is found not in escaping responsibility but in embracing it—especially when it involves the spiritual care of others. So instead of avoiding responsibility today, let’s echo Isaiah’s words: “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).
