One of my favourite nature scenes is a still body of water reflecting a majestic mountain peak. The mountain, in all its glory, is mirrored perfectly by the calm water, creating a picture of pure harmony. But when a breeze stirs the surface, ripples distort the reflection, and the serene image is lost. Similarly, when we allow our own wisdom or the world’s agendas to govern our lives, the pure image of God that we are called to reflect becomes distorted. Like the rippled lake, we fall prey to the winds of the world, losing sight of our purpose and reflecting its chaos instead of God’s perfection. Scripture reminds us how to remain still and undistorted: “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (Philippians 4:8).
