It’s basic math. If there is a pile of 10 gold coins in the middle of a table, each time you take one and add it to your pile, your pile increases. So, if you want to keep growing your pile of gold, keep adding. Never subtract. It’s how most of us live life. Acquire, at all costs, as much as you can. It’s the path to riches. But God likes to mess with our math. “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty” (Proverbs 11:24). Give (subtract) and you gain (add). In fact, it’s even better than that. Subtract, and you will multiply (Luke 6:38). How does this crazy math work? Our selfish view is based on limited resources. However, God is unlimited. His resources are unending. And so where we see limits, he is eternal. Where we see scarcity, he is abundance. So, when we give away what we have, we don’t end up with less; instead, we create space for God to do more. This doesn’t mean gold coins, but treasures far more precious. “My goal is that you may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that you may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that you may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ” (Colossians 2:2).
