Two thousand years ago, the Bible writers described what the last days would look like before Jesus returns. While some passages describe unstable political situations and an unstable natural earth (Luke 21:8-11), Paul tells us about individuals – you and me. “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be…” what comes next? Violent, killing, destructive? While some may be like this, Paul gives us a more accurate insight into our modern society. “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5). It’s an insight into a world obsessed with self. A world where pride is more important than humility, where mocking is chosen over respect, where pleasure is our God. It’s a chilling picture of the world we live in, showing that Jesus’ return is near. Will you be part of the sign – “lovers of pleasure”, or part of the saved – “lovers of God”?
