One of the things that has struck me while visiting Europe is how every town and village has a church. The towering edifice is hard to miss even with the development that has taken place in the centuries since the church was built. However, what was most impactful on entering the churches, was not the beautiful architecture and incredible lighting and art, but the silence. Instantly the sounds of traffic and voices vanished. An incredible silence and with it, peace instantly envelops you. And with this peace comes a focus and awareness of God. The psalmist told us about this exact experience: “Be still, and know that I am God!” (Psalms 46:10). It’s a call to find the silence in which we get to know God. Psalm 46 is a psalm about a time of war and trouble. It begins with, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (Psalms 46:1). While silence can be experienced in a sacred space, true silence is an intentional choice. When we put down our device, turn off the TV, stop chasing our desires, and seek God. It’s then that we discover the awe and wonder of God’s presence in our lives.Today, whatever noise our troubles are filling your life, take a moment to be still, and hear God.
