I was recently at a shop looking at a book about plants in the area. It struck me how, without thinking of the significance, we have a desire to name and know the names of things. Every human, plant, mammal, bird, insect, street, ocean and even star has a name. If life came from nothing and we all return to nothing, why is naming anything important? But, if we are created by a creator, if all of creation exists for a purpose, then names are important. When God created humans, one of the first tasks he gave us was to name everything. “Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19). God’s name is important, and He wants us to be part of His name. When Moses asked God to show him His glory, God revealed His name to Moses. “Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:5-6). God’s glory is his name. God’s name is his character; compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
