Pro 25v4 – The refiner

Fire assaying is a traditional method of refining silver that involves heating the silver at a high temperature until the impurities rise to the surface where they can be removed. Once the silver is pure, it can be used for jewellery or other purposes. “Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewellery.” (Proverbs 25:4). God isn’t teaching us about making jewellery, but about making something much more precious – His jewels. “‘They shall be Mine,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘On the day that I make them My jewels.’” (Malachi 3:17). For us to be included in God’s jewels we need to be refined. Our impurities need to be removed (Malachi 3:3). This happens through the heat of trials. It’s never easy to go through trials. Yet, in our period of difficulty, God refines us. When we are sick or suffering, our pride, our hatred, our selfishness, our lusts, and other “impurities” quickly leave us. Yet, when does refining end? When is the silver pure? When the refiner can see his reflection in the silver. “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
