Pro 13v3 – Guarding the captives

The infamous Alcatraz prison was almost impossible to escape with its guard towers and searchlights, barbed wire fences, motion detectors, and warning sirens. Plus, the prison was also surrounded by the cold, rough waters of San Francisco Bay, making escape by swimming impossible. These were the measures taken to make sure dangerous criminals didn’t escape. We would consider the most dangerous criminals to be those who kill. What are your security measures to keep your killers confined? “The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21). Our words can literally or spiritually kill people; that’s how powerful they are. And so we are told to keep our words well guarded – “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3). Anger. Gossip. Swearing. Lies. Hate. Some of the names of our killers that, if not guarded, can escape our mouths. The only solution is to install the best security. “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Psalm 141:3). Let God guard your words, and you will preserve your life.
